Vico Sotto Speaks Out on Corruption Allegations in KMJS Interview
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto recently sat down with Jessica Soho on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) to address the growing controversy surrounding flood control projects and alleged corruption involving contractors. The interview shed light not only on the issue at hand but also on Sotto’s perspective on governance and integrity.
The Allegations
The controversy revolves around Pacifico “Curlee” Discaya II and Cezarah “Sarah” Discaya, contractors linked to flood control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The Discayas have made claims about profit margins and project earnings, but Sotto pointed out inconsistencies in their statements, saying their figures don’t add up.
Sotto’s Stand on Transparency
Sotto revealed that he has seen several “red flags” in transactions and financial records. These, he said, have already been referred to national agencies for further investigation. He expressed confidence that accountability measures are moving forward, with DPWH leadership now more proactive in addressing corruption.
When asked if Pasig is free from corruption, Sotto gave a candid response: personally, he can say there is “zero corruption” in his office. However, he admitted that it’s unrealistic to claim absolute zero corruption in any government unit. He estimated that in Pasig, they’ve managed to eliminate around 99% of corrupt practices, but the fight is ongoing.
Corruption as a Cultural Issue
Beyond government offices, Sotto emphasized that corruption is a cultural problem. From small acts to big contracts, what people tolerate as “normal” contributes to the persistence of corruption. He urged Filipinos to reject even minor forms of dishonesty in daily life to help change the system.
Sotto admitted that the constant battle against corruption can be discouraging. Still, he reaffirmed his commitment to continue doing what he can within his powers as mayor, determined not to back down from the fight.
The Bigger Picture
The KMJS interview highlighted how corruption in infrastructure projects remains a systemic issue. While allegations against contractors like the Discayas are still under scrutiny, Sotto’s stance shows the importance of vigilance, transparency, and cultural change in combating corruption.
